Adam Schiff Announces Bid For Sen. Dianne Feinstein's US Senate Seat

Rep. Adam Schiff, a Democrat, declared his intention to run for the Senate in 2024 on Thursday, beginning a campaign in what is expected to be a heated Democratic primary.

“In this election, I’m looking forward to putting in a lot of campaigning time, meeting Californians where they are, and learning what they want from their senator. I’m hoping to gain their support and confidence, ” Schiff, who represents the 30th Congressional District, said in a statement announcing his run.

Schiff is the second well-known Democratic congressman from California to declare his intent to run for the U.S. Senate. Last Monday, Rep. Katie Porter declared her intention to run for the United States Senate.

Schiff, 62, is serving his eleventh term as a representative in the House. In 2001, he won his first congressional election. Parts of West Hollywood, Burbank, Glendale, Pasadena, and other cities are included in his congressional district.

Reps. Adam Schiff and Eric Swalwell, both Democrats from California, would not be allowed to sit on the House committee that regulates national intelligence, Speaker Kevin McCarthy reaffirmed.

He is vying for Feinstein’s old Senate seat, which she has held since 1992. Feinstein, 89, has submitted paperwork for her reelection in 2024 with the FEC, but she has not yet declared if she wants to run for a sixth full term. Feinstein has also been under fire for not being qualified for the position.

On Wednesday, Feinstein addressed taking some time after the passing of her spouse and said she’ll decide “probably in a couple of months” whether to run.

“Oh, I think it’s fine. I think people should if they want to run, run. For me, I just need a little bit more time,” she said.

A day after being kicked off the House Intelligence Committee by Speaker of the House Kevin McCarthy, Schiff makes his declaration. Before now, Schiff served as the committee’s chair.
