A lady has been charged with a crime for bringing a wild raccoon into a pub in North Dakota, which led to the state’s health department issuing a rabies exposure alert.
The 38-year-old Maddock resident Erin Christensen is accused with misdemeanor charges of giving false information to law enforcement, tampering with tangible evidence, and illegally possessing furbearers.
Christensen was detained last week after various search orders in and near Maddock which led to the discovery of Christensen and the raccoon.
Christensen claimed that her family named the raccoon Rocky after discovering it approximately three months ago on the side of a road. She claimed that they were restoring the animal’s health in preparation for its eventual release back into the wild.
Keeping a wild raccoon is prohibited by the North Dakota Board of Animal Health regulations.
The animal was put to death by the authorities after testing negative for rabies.
