These days we have numerous job opportunities that can cater to almost everyone. However, this wasn’t always so. While Ancient Rome had an impressive amount of job opportunities ranging from farmers and merchants to gladiators and senators.
Here are some of the job opportunities that were available in ancient Rome.
1. Farming
Farmers have been necessary for every empire to keep the food supply going. This was even more important in times of war. The farmers had the responsibility of providing food for the large population.
As a result of this, there were numerous opportunities in farming. Opportunities such as planting, sowing, reaping, and harvesting. The farmers in Rome cultivated crops like wheat, barley, oats, honey, grapes, and vegetables. They also reared their animals.
2. Construction Work
The Roman Empire was always needing new buildings and repairs on old ones as a result of how big it was. The construction workers built homes, temples, and public baths in ancient Rome.
They were also responsible for creating the roads, pyramids, statues, bridges, and aqueducts that the empire is famous for.
While construction was a work mostly done by slaves, some workers were paid.
3. Business
Ancient Rome had a booming economy that enabled businesses to thrive. Rome had a market for almost everything, ranging from bakeries and restaurants to fashion and textile shops and furniture stores.
These businesses were mostly owned by families and run by them. They also had markets for Goldsmiths, blacksmiths, hairdressers and fishermen.
4. Slavery
Slavery was a booming venture in ancient Rome. Some people were in the business of capturing slaves and selling them off to the wealthy.
These slaves were used for all sorts of labour and were most often treated poorly. Historians estimate that slaves made up 25% of the population of Rome.
Wealthy people could own as many slaves as they liked.
5. Military
With the rapid growth of the Roman Empire, some people sought to capture it while others also sought ways to expand its territory.
The military had opportunities for everyone regardless of social standing. This was a means for those of very low social class to be able to grow.
There were also odd jobs like Fuller, Whipping boys, Armpit hair plucker and many more.
