During an attempted holdup in the store, a robbery suspect and a grocery clerk fatally shot one another, according to authorities.
The Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office reported that the shootings on Friday night inside the El Barakah Supermarket in Chicago’s South Shore neighbourhood resulted in the deaths of clerk Ali Hassan, 63, of Berwyn, and would-be robber Nicholas Williams, 24.
Williams attempted to rob the business when he entered at 6:20 p.m. He pulled out a weapon, but Hassan drew a revolver from his waistband and shot Williams in the chest, according to the police.
Williams retaliated by shooting Hassan in the back and chest.
Williams attempted to flee the shop but, according to authorities, collapsed and died a short distance away.
An immigrant from Palestine named Hassan was taken to the University of Chicago Medical Center where he was subsequently declared dead.
According to police, two other customers of the shop were unharmed.
