The telephone was invented in the 19th century. During the 19th century, the communication device called the telephone was developed, but the more straightforward idea of running underground cables didn’t go well with the engineers.
As a result of technical limitations of the first generation telephones, each telephone requires its communication line hung between a house or pole till it gets to the phone, depending on where the caller connects.
The Old Stockholm telephone tower was a metallic structure built to link approximately 5,500 telephone lines in the Swedish capital of Stockholm. Stockholms Allmänna Telefon AB ordered the construction of a tower in 1887, permitting the connection of about 5,500 overhead telephone lines.
The tower was a quadrangular metallic structure, 80 metres tall and gradually became an eyesore to the local population. The company asked architect Fritz Eckert to carry out enhancement and renovation work. Then the four turrets were added.
However, the telephone tower was used until 1913, after underground cables had been completed. It then lost its use, and on July 23, 1952, it was damaged by a fire incident which eventually led to its demolition in 1953.
