A 76-year-old Minnesota man is facing criminal charges after a bullet went through a child’s bedroom window in a neighbouring home while he was shooting at a squirrel.

East Grand Forks Police said they arrested the man on Sunday after a neighbour reported bullet holes in their siding and a hole in their son’s bedroom window.

According to police, the man told officers he had been watching baseball games on television when he noticed a squirrel on his bird feeder. He told officers he shot the squirrel with a.22-caliber rifle from his bedroom window and thought he hit it.

According to court documents, he told officers that he had shot at squirrels at least six times in the previous two years because he considered it “war” when they got into his bird feeder.

As he was being arrested, the man’s wife said to him, “Well, I told you.”

The man is charged with recklessly handling a dangerous weapon, a misdemeanour, and a felony count of discharging a firearm within the confines of a municipality. For the felony charge, he faces up to two years in prison and a $5,000 fine.
