It is no secret that the curriculum has experienced a tremendous change of late. Nope, kids are not learning advanced stuff as they do in China; we are more democratic and sympathetic to the mind of a child (pun and sarcasm intended). We are rather teaching them things that would make them consciously aware of their sexuality.
In a society that is speedily growing to a point where it has begun to expose children to LGBTQ-related materials, and other sexual content with the aim of ‘helping them embrace their sexuality’ as young people which will further help them to make important decisions about their lives, there is little or no concern about what effect this could have on the moral perception of the child.
It is this intention that has further led to the publication, distribution and even having books that display such contents in schools (not colleges FYI). Children as young as possible would have access to these books like Gender Queer or Fun Home, and other similar books. And what makes it further ridiculous is that the school system in various places has insisted on keeping this going, irrespective of the concern of parents or guardians of some of these children.
In our defence, while we understand that the school system has looked at the issue of transphobia, and how it can further suppress people from embracing their identity, it is also important to consider the fact that these decisions take not just the mere desire to do so, but also the adult perspective.
Exposing such sexual content to children, as well as making available to them vulgar-riddled books with that sole aim or similar aims in mind is definitely going to affect their sexual orientation. This would end up making them make decisions which, as children, they may not fully understand. Such decisions would definitely be required only when they are adults and old enough to understand the weight that comes with it.
In conclusion, the 21st century may have come with a demand that may have seen traditional human rights being expanded to accommodate other rights that have come to be conventional. However, the demands of the 21st century to accommodate these rights based on sexuality should at least not be allowed into the threshold of the classroom where the moral orientation of the children is still very much fragile, and could not in most circumstances, comprehend the weight of the such a topic.
