Legend has it that the brothers, Romulus and Remus were responsible for founding Ancient Rome. This story has been retold numerous times, even in schools and become set in stone.
Romulus and Remus were twin brothers. They were abandoned by their parents when they were babies. They were then put into a basket and placed into the River Tiber.
The basket was in shallow water and the twins were found by a female wolf. The wolf cared for the babies for a short time till they were found by a shepherd. The shepherd then adopted the twins.
When Romulus and Remus grew up, they chose to find a city where the wolf had found them.
The brothers disagreed over where the site should be located and Remus was killed by his brother. This left Romulus as the sole founder of the new city and he named it Rome.
It was said that he founded the city in 753 BC. While this legend of Romulus and Remus creates the impression that Rome was created very quickly; nothing could be further from the truth.
This actual story of Rome is not as interesting or captivating. The city grew from numerous settlements that were around the seven hills near the River Tiber.
The settlements came together for proximity to water sources and strength in numbers in times of war. The early people of Rome were called Latins. They were a tribe that came from the Plains of Latium. They were very successful farmers and traders.
The people of Rome had always been wealthy and so a target for other nations. As a result of this, they prioritized security and invested in an army. The army enlarged the territory and protected the city.
