Rep. Jerry Nadler beats his colleague Rep. Carolyn Maloney in a contentious Democratic primary on Tuesday in New York’s newly drawn 12th Congressional District.
In November’s general election, he’s guaranteed to win the closely Democratic district, which merged Manhattan’s Upper West Side and Upper East Side into one and pitted the two long-serving lawmakers in opposition.
Nadler and Maloney were first elected in 1992 and have risen to prominence in the House, where Nadler chairs the Judiciary Committee and Maloney chairs the Oversight Committee.
After he had cast his ballot in the Upper West Side on Tuesday morning, Nadler said that he intends to hold his top spot on the Judiciary panel if re-elected.
“I’ll are trying to find to remain the top Democrat on the Judiciary Committee, and I do not think there may be many queries that’ll happen,” Nadler said. “What I intend to achieve is, I believe this country is simply a democratic system.
And we are in a pivotal position at the Judiciary Committee to guard against a threat that comes through voting rights legislation and administration.”
If Republicans win control of the House this fall, Nadler might lose his committee gavel and possibly serve as a ranking member.
