Paul Pelosi, the 82-year-old husband of U.S. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, was hospitalized early on Friday morning after an unknown person entered their San Francisco home early that morning and “violently beat” the man, according to a statement from spokesman Drew Hammill.

California Democrat Nancy Pelosi, who is guarded by the U.S. Capitol Police, wasn’t in San Francisco at the time. According to the statement, police detained the suspect in the incident, however, they are still looking into his or her motivation.

Hammill said in the statement:

“Mr Pelosi was taken to the hospital, where he is receiving excellent medical care and is expected to make a full recovery,”

“The Speaker and her family are grateful to the first responders and medical professionals involved, and request privacy at this time,” he added.

Requests for more information and confirmation of whether police intended to hold a press conference regarding the attack were not immediately answered by the San Francisco Police Department.

According to CNN, the assailant was a man who used a hammer.

The FBI and the U.S. Capitol Police have confirmed that they are involved in the inquiry.

Following the assault, Speaker Pelosi called with President Joe Biden and Democratic Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, both from New York.

In a statement, Schumer called the assault on Paul Pelosi “a dastardly act.”

“I spoke with Speaker Pelosi earlier this morning and conveyed my deepest concern and heartfelt wishes to her husband and their family, and I wish him a speedy recovery,” Schumer said.

Biden was praying for the Pelosi family, according to a statement from White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre, and he is extremely delighted that a full recovery is expected.

“The President continues to condemn all violence, and asks that the family’s desire for privacy be respected,” Jean-Pierre added.
