The National Park Service advised visitors to leave the potentially dangerous amphibians alone, despite the fact that some might be tempted to give the Sonoran Desert Toad a kiss.

The government organization issued a Facebook post last week advising people not to lick any toads they may come across. Although it’s unclear whether a specific incident led to the warning, the National Park Service stated that “here we are.”

“These toads have prominent parotoid glands that secrete a potent toxin,” the post said. “It can make you sick if you handle the frog or get the poison in your mouth.”

Outside of a fable, it might seem weird for someone to be drawn to lick an amphibian, but this particular toad has been in high demand, according to a New York Times piece from earlier this year.

According to the Oakland Zoo, people have used the toad’s toxin as a psychedelic, smoking it to feel exhilaration and have hallucinations.

According to the Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum, the toxin is a protective measure by the toad but can be fatal to other creatures, including dogs.

According to the National Park Service, the Sonoran Desert toad, also known as the Colorado River toad, is one of the largest toads that are endemic to North America and is around 7 inches long.

According to Robert Villa, president of the Tucson Herpetological Society, the toads may face population collapse and extinction since so many people are removing them from their natural habitats.

Bufotenin, one of the substances present in toads’ skin, is prohibited in California, but according to the Oakland Zoo, up to 10 toads can be legally captured there with the right permit. The zoo also cautioned that anybody who wants to collect toads to smoke their poisons may still be subject to criminal prosecution.
