A suspect in the UK’s deadliest terror attack was taken into US custody early Sunday morning.
Officials said Abu Agila Mohammad Masud Kheir Al-Marimi was arrested for allegedly assisting in the creation of the bomb that blew up Pan Am Flight 103 over Lockerbie, Scotland, in 1988.
The plane was flying from London to New York when it exploded, killing 270 people, including 11 people on the ground in a small town near England.
The attack killed 190 Americans and citizens from 20 other countries. Several of the slain passengers were Syracuse University students returning home for the holidays after studying abroad for a semester.
Syracuse University Chancellor Kent Syverud said in a statement Sunday that the development was a significant step in the process of bringing those responsible for this despicable act to justice.
Masud was arrested two years after authorities charged him with involvement in the massacre. Libyan authorities were holding him.
The suspect is the third Libyan intelligence official charged in the attack, but he would be the first to face trial in the United States.
“At long last, this man responsible for killing Americans and many others will be subject to justice for his crimes,” William Barr, the US Attorney General at the time, said at a news conference.
