Halden Fengsel, Norway’s most recent prison, holds roughly 250 prisoners. Almost half have engaged in violent crimes like murder, assault or rape. Some are sentenced for selling or trafficking drugs.
Returning them back to society as better human beings is a major objective.
Occasionally referred to as the world’s most humane prison, Halden Fengsel looks a bit distinct from most other Prisons. Built in the centre of the woods, the designers wanted to retain much of nature within the prison walls. There are lots of blueberries, trees, adders and uneven grounds.
It would be effortless to run and hide, but no one does.
The cells contain a private bathroom including a toilet, shower, sink, small fridge, bed, TV, a bookshelf, a chair, and a desk.
In the school facility, there’s also a grocery store named Justin, which means “The Justice”, where prisoners can buy anything they need to prepare meals for themselves.
There is also a nicely equipped music studio called Criminal Records,
a computer room, a garden, a gym, a training room, a holy room, a library, a family visiting the house and a lot more. The school presents prisoners with a chance to get a sound education while serving their sentences.
When it’s daytime, guards usually socialize with the prisoners. It could be over coffee, waffles and coffee, volleyball, dinner or just casual conversations. Numerous areas have no surveillance cameras, and prisoners can move around freely (to some extent).
Numerous people have indicated that prison is overly extravagant and that being in prison like this is not a good penalty.
Warden Are Høidal says:
“Revenge alone does not give any good results.
Rehabilitation is key. Finding proper housing and a steady income even before the prisoners are released is believed to contribute to lower recidivism rates.”
