The internet has been a buzz of late owing to the fact that a new force has been created or has had its identity announced to the world. This new force made up mainly of people born from the last days of the 20th century to those born in the 21st century has been altering standards, cultures and laws around various institutions, and even in the world. While their focus ranges across various places, we shall be looking at the impact they are having in the corporate world.
Gen Z or Generation Z are people who were born within the last years of the 1990s to those born in the 2010s. They are mostly young people and youths, who are notorious not for their age, but for their views and perceptions which are clearly different from what has been obtainable. These range from politics to cultural beliefs, lifestyles, and so on. It is a force that has systematically undergone a revolution that aims at changing things from the way we used to know it to the way the world has come to know it today.
Gen Z in the workplace is a different type of story. Before now, the work environment takes a different kind of look. An official look, where everyone tends to be serious and look official with their dressings usually consisting of shirts, ties, dull-coloured suits or dresses. Then you have offices filled with paper and files, and heavy furniture and computers with lots of wires. The demeanour is also a serious one, with fewer jokes or fun, and more work.
For Gen Z, the revolution had to take a different turn to affect the one place where people have experienced less change over the years – the corporate world. We shall be briefly looking at how this generation of young people is completely changing things within the corporate world.
1. The Course Of Study.
Before now, you need to study courses like finances, law, medicine and surgery or other courses that would land you a white-collar job before you can work in the corporate world. However, this generation of young people has chosen to focus more on arts, ICT, and other areas that were not popular until now. Some have even chosen to quit school and learn skills that would end up making them employers of labour, instead of preparing them to be good labourers.
2. Work Environment.
The work environment or office has more art displayed, with less furniture and more room to move around, not to add other furniture. They believe in keeping it simple, as you would see only a few pieces of paper most time being notepads and so on. The computer could be just a few laptops and cell phones, with only a few desktops in place. They tend to leverage the internet or computer gadgets to get work done.
3. Work Attire.
A normal Gen Z person would wear casuals to work as against the usual dress ‘code’ stated above. The perception is that your dress does not matter but your input and how well you do your work. So you might just work into an office o establishment owned by one of them and find out it looks like a gathering in a family BBQ or something.
4. Work Attitude.
This is a generation that has less patience and a low tolerance for behavioural conduct that could be easily written off as ‘part of the specs of the job’. In case you happen to have anger issues or get easily irritated or cannot resist the urge to show off before your subordinates, ensure that these subordinates do not belong to this generation of people, as they can as well point out your flaws without caring about the possible repercussions of what their actions may be. For instance, working overtime may be a thing of the past, but for Gen Z, such workplace practice is definitely not what he would want to do irrespective of what benefits may come with it. They are not being lazy or insolent, they are just being themselves.
Other attributes may be experienced by employers of Gen Z in various workplaces or in a workplace, but the fact remains that this is a generation that is out to change the way things have been done. Whether this may be good or bad, time will certainly tell.
