Florida Principal Forced To Resign Over David Statue Welcomed In Florence

An ex-principal travelled to Italy and was greeted with welcoming arms after being forced to quit when her school displayed the naked David statue to children.

Friday, Hope Carrasquilla and her family visited Florence‘s iconic Accademia Gallery museum after the mayor of the city had urged her to come to see David for herself after her abrupt dismissal last month, which he branded outrageously.

The director of Accademia, Cecilie Hollberg, granted Carrasquilla and her family a VIP tour of the facility, which of course included a close-up look at Michelangelo’s famous sculpture.

She said hosting them was a pleasure, adding … “I am happy to be able to welcome her and introduce her to the beauties of our museum, besides showing her the David, a sculpture that, I repeat as I have said, has nothing to do with pornography. It’s a masterpiece, it represents a religious symbol of purity and innocence, the victory of good over evil.”

When Carrasquilla was fired from Tallahassee Classical School in March, Mayor Dario Nardella spoke out about her situation. It appears that Nardella extended the white carpet to her and continued to support her despite the backlash.

He writes, “A few weeks ago she was attacked for showing her students Michelangelo’s David. Today it receives from @comunefi an award in the name of art and culture. Art is civilization and whoever teaches it deserves respect. Welcome Professor Hope Carrasquilla!”

If you weren’t informed… Parents who saw pictures of David’s naked body being presented to their kids during a lesson on the Renaissance in front of sixth graders expressed indignation, and Carrasquilla resigned. They thought it was inappropriate and were upset that they weren’t informed beforehand.

Carrasquilla ultimately accepted responsibility, telling the local media that she was “saddened.”

It’s only the most recent example of parents in Florida exercising their parental rights over the curriculum for their kids in public schools; this problem has been going on for a while.
