Six days after being fatally stabbed, a paramedic from New York City who responded to the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001, will be laid to rest on Wednesday.
Lt. Alison Russo-Elling, a virtually 25-year veteran of the New York City Fire Department, was attacked “unprovoked” while on duty in Queens on the afternoon of September 29. She was stabbed roughly 19 times in the chest. She was 61.
Later, 34-year-old Peter Zisopoulos was detained in connection with the murder. He is accused of killing someone and having a weapon illegally. Authorities state that he has never been arrested before and has no known connections to Russo-Elling.
Russo-Elling was allegedly attacked while close to her station’s quarters in Astoria, near 20th Avenue and Steinway Street.
Authorities have access to surveillance video that allegedly captures the incident. In the video, Russo-Elling can pass by Zisopoulos as he waits in a building’s entryway.
Authorities claim that suddenly, Zisopoulos “runs full speed” behind Russo-Elling and seems to take out a steak knife, knocking her to the ground and stabbing her.
The footage shows a witness trying to step in, but Zisopoulos drives them away while holding the knife in his hand. After that, he returns to his flat, where he barricaded himself before being arrested.
According to investigators, Russo-Elling was taken in serious condition to Mount Sinai Queens Hospital, where she later passed away.
Russo-coworkers Elling’s referred to her as “the mother hen of the station” who “was constantly looking out for everybody” following her murder.
According to the authorities, she was the 1,158th member of the FDNY to lose their life while performing their duties and the second emergency medical worker to be killed on the streets of the city in the previous five years.
RIP.
