Man’s growth depends on his ability to utilize his intellect to carry out much-needed change and development in his environment. During the stone ages and the early days of the dark ages, he had to rely on experiences and ‘sedimentary knowledge to get by. While his growth was not rapid, it saw him through certain difficulties.
As time went by, the source of his knowledge began to broaden to include not just experiences but institutions that offered his knowledge and skills that would enable him to maximize his growth process to exceed the benchmark or level he had to settle within the past owing to how limited his intellect was.
These institutions have spanned centuries, evolving to include more knowledge-worthy things which came to be as a result of a continuously evolving society. In the end, every aspect of human existence can be represented via a course of study either in high school or university. All the world’s knowledge is easily accessible through the school system.
But while this system may exist, another system exists on a parallel level with it. This system forgoes most of the theory and dives right into the practical, unlike the school system that teaches more of theory, letting out less of practical, living you the opportunity to explore it on your own. While the two systems signal a different kind of era for education, it brings a dilemma of some sort.
Entrepreneurship running side-by-side with a college education in a parallel setting would gladly be welcomed at any point in time, in fact, most universities have integrated it into their curriculum. But when it comes to which should be chosen against the other, the dilemma it creates is hyper-frustrating. This is because they both have their flaws and benefits.
For entrepreneurship, it gives you the opportunity of focusing on the skill squarely without having to include other additional information or knowledge which may not be exactly beneficial with regard to the field you are focused in. It involves a short period of learning, and with the growth of ICT, you can easily learn a skill online at little or no cost at all. While it could be less expensive, less time-consuming and has a flexible learning opportunity, it limits human interaction which is highly beneficial for social purposes.
A college education offers you unlimited access to educational materials and resources that would aid your learning process, including human interaction for social benefits. It is however expensive, with a lengthy learning period. And with the trend of more billionaires with no college education, it is less encouraging and safe for people who really do not care about money.
In the end, they both have their benefits and flaws, hence raising the question of a valid option between a college education and entrepreneurship. The truth is simple though – there is not really an option here. As long as you have your diploma, the decision is simpler. It is so because you would have made up your mind about what you would want to pursue in life.
When you make this decision, you can always figure out where it falls under – does it go under entrepreneurship, or would you be requiring a college education to see it through? It all depends on what you want out of life. So no, there is no really an option; the option rides on your dreams.
