In central Colombia, a bus and two other vehicles were buried by a mudslide caused by heavy rain. At least 27 people were killed in the disaster, and more were trapped as rescuers tried to reach them.
In the village of Pueblo Rico, which is located in the Risaralda district, a highway was split in half by a mudslide late on Sunday.
President Gustavo Petro tweeted that three children were among the deceased. Additional individuals were saved and transferred to hospitals. More than 70 searches and rescue personnel attempted to reach the remaining people using backhoes and other tools.
As he confirmed the death toll, Petro said, “Solidarity with the victims’ families, they’ll have the complete support of the national government,”
More than 20 people were on board the public bus when it was abandoned and buried in the highway’s debris. The community had been in danger of a mudslide because of the La Nia weather phenomenon’s severe rains, according to Colombia’s national emergency management organization.
