Debris Falling From Sinkhole Closes Several Lanes On 5 Freeway In Glendale

On Saturday night in Glendale, a sinkhole on the southbound 5 Freeway caused concrete pieces to fall onto Western Avenue, closing both the freeway’s lanes and the street below.

After 9 p.m., Caltrans District 7 tweeted that repairs were being made.

The California Highway Patrol reports that the falling concrete was first noticed at 5:34 pm.

According to the CHP log, Glendale police officers arrived on the scene soon and reported that concrete was “actively dropping” from a one-foot-by-one-foot hole in the middle of the roadway. At 6:10 p.m., it appeared to have expanded to two feet by two feet.

Workers from Caltrans responded to a sinkhole on the Glendale 5 Freeway that was causing debris to fall onto the street below.

At 6:08 p.m., the CHP issued a SigAlert closing all southbound highway lanes. Glendale police then closed all eastbound and westbound Western lanes between Flower and Lake streets.

7:30 p.m. saw the reopening of the Western Avenue on-ramp to the northbound Golden State Freeway, and 7:49 p.m. saw the reopening of the HOV and fast lane. Lanes 2, 3, and 4 of the Western off-ramp remained closed.

As a result of the falling debris, no reports of vehicle damage or injuries were immediately available.

This report will be updated when new information becomes available.
