Deadly Blast Hits Religious School In Northern Afghanistan

A religious school in the Samangan region of northern Afghanistan was destroyed by a blast on Wednesday, killing 15, according to a provincial official.

The explosion in the provincial capital of Aybak also injured at least 20 persons, according to Emdadullah Muhajir, a representative for the provincial government of Samangan.

“A blast took place around 12:45 p.m. inside Jahdia Madrassa in the center of the city. Lots of boys are studying at this madrassa,” he continued.

Who was responsible for the explosion was not immediately known. Muhajir claimed that an inquiry had started.

Abdul Nafi Takor, a spokesman for the interior ministry, confirmed the explosion while estimating the number of deaths and injuries at 10 so far.

“Our detective and security forces are working to identify the perpetrators of this unforgivable crime and bring them to justice,” said Takor.

Since assuming control of the country last year, the Taliban claim they have been concentrating on securing the war-torn nation. However, a number of attacks, including those at mosques, have occurred recently, some of which the Islamic State has claimed responsibility for.
