It is a challenging world, but more challenging for a black parent if we are being honest. There are various hindrances to the progress, growth, and dominance of black people anywhere and everywhere in the world today.

To make sure that your children and kids do not fall for these hinderances, but the triumph over them, here are key steps you have to take as a parent, or a prospective parent (lol):

  • Teach them to have pride in their race

Inferiority complex created by the assumption that other races are superior to the black race has a way of messing with the mentality of our kids, especially in the midst of other races. So teach them not to feel any less superior because of their skin colour.

  • Educate them about their ancestors

Always make out time to educate your kids on their ancestry. This can help them remember their root, and take pride in the fact that their ancestors were once ‘gods’ who ruled the world.

  • Teach them to shun violence

Despite the fact that it is a wrong misconception to associate violence with black people, it is widely known that most black youths affiliate, or join violent gangs which helps to foster the growth of crime and untimely death amongst black youths. So teach them to shun violence, and seek peaceful means in resolving any conflict or disagreement they have.

  • Teach them to embrace education

Most black kids just want to make money and forget about school. Though money is good, education can help you ensure that your riches are well invested. Also, education is enlightenment and more black people need to enable them to compete in the real world. So teach them to value education first.

  • Teach them manners

It is a huge misconception to attribute manners to being some “white man thing”. Having manners brings you the respect you deserve. So teach your kids that. Trains your male kids to be good gentlemen; train your girl kids to be feminists who would defend the honour in being who they are.
