Late Saturday, a shooter entered an LGBTQ club in Colorado Springs and started shooting with a long rifle, killing at least five people and injuring 18, according to authorities.
In Club Q, “at least two brave people,” according to Colorado Springs Police Chief Adrian Vasquez, “confronted and fought with the suspect and were able to stop him from continuing to kill and damage others.”
At a press conference on Sunday morning, Vasquez remarked, “We owe them a big debt of gratitude.
At a news conference afterwards, Republican Mayor John Suthers stated that “their actions clearly saved lives.”
The suspected shooter, identified by authorities as Anderson Lee Aldrich, 22, was hospitalized after being injured in the incident, according to Sgt. Pamela Castro, a spokesperson for the Colorado Springs Police Department, during a previous briefing.
The hospitals are assisting us in notifying injured people’s families, according to Castro. “We have several victims being transferred to multiple local hospitals via ambulance and police vehicles,” Castro stated.
According to Colorado Springs Fire Chief Randy Royal, patients are receiving care at three different hospitals.
Two of the seven patients being treated at Penrose Hospital are still in critical condition; the remaining five patients “mainly had extremity injuries,” according to Chief Medical Officer William Plauth of the hospital, who also noted that two of those five patients have already received treatment and been discharged.
Ten patients were admitted to Memorial Hospital Central, according to chief medical officer David Steinbruner. Steinbruner stated that those wounded included “several gunshot wounds” and “many patients” in the ICU.
He described the situations of the patients as “a changing goal.”
According to officials, Memorial Hospital North received two patients.
Castro stated that as the inquiry progressed, she anticipated the number of casualties to fluctuate. She continued by saying that “several injuries were caused by people fleeing” the site.
Castro remarked, “We will remain here for many, many hours to come.
She stated there was assistance from the FBI at the location.
