Andrew Gillum, who rose to national prominence after he became Florida’s first African-American nominee for governor in 2018 has apologized after he was found in a Miami Beach hotel room with a man who overdosed on what police believed was crystal meth.
Now the rising star in the democratic party’s career in politics looks to be in danger after he was found intoxicated on early Friday morning at the Mondrian South Beach hotel.
According to the police report obtained by the Miami Herald, Gillum was found with Aldo Mejias, 56 with a 30-year-old man called Travis Dyson after Mejias had called for help around 1 a.m, both Gillum and Dyson were being treated by paramedics for a suspected meth overdose.
Meanwhile, Mejias told police officers that he got to the hotel room around 11 p.m to find Gillum and Dyson under the influence of an unknown substance. He said he performed CPR on Dyson before paramedics arrived because he had collapsed on the bed earlier when he opened the door.
On the other hand, Gillum was found in the bathroom vomiting. The police report said that the rising star in the democratic party and a CNN contributor was too intoxicated to speak to the officers. Also, reports said that officers found three baggies of what was believed to be meth on the bed and floor.
Gillum later released a statement on Friday that said he took too much drink at a wedding reception. “I was in Miami last night for a wedding celebration when first responders were called to assist one of my friends,” Gillum said in the statement. “While I had too much to drink, I want to be clear that I have never used methamphetamines. I apologize to the people of Florida for the distraction this has caused our movement.”
He further thanked the first responders while asking for privacy. “I’m thankful to the incredible Miami Beach EMS team for their efforts. I will spend the next few weeks with my family and appreciate privacy during this time,” he added.
Meanwhile, Gillum has been a member of the CNN since 2019 after his election defeat.
