American history is well known for stories of presidential elections conducted and won by white males. However, not many know that Black women have been running for the presidency for years. In 1972, Gerrald Ford was the winner of the presidential candidacy. But his opponent was no other than Shirley Chisolm, a Black Woman from the New York.
While She was campaigning for president, Chilsom made history as she was the first African-American to do such a thing through a major party’s nomination. Chisolm worked harder than most candidates in history to bring her name to Limelight.
Some today would Admire Chisolm’s hard work, even if they didn’t give her the presidency. A member of a congressional committee, Kimaya Davis, Said: “She paved the way for me to be able to set foot on Capitol Hill.”
Even though Chisolm didn’t become the first Black president, she was the first African-American congresswoman.
