A Former Warden & His Brother Were Detained For Allegedly Shooting Two Migrants

A male immigrant was shot and killed, according to a Texas DPS official.
Two migrants were shot in a rural area outside of El Paso, Texas, with one of them dying, prompting an investigation by the Texas Rangers, FBI, and a number of other organizations.

A representative for the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) stated that the Hudspeth County Sheriff’s Office informed them of a shooting death on Tuesday and that preliminary evidence indicates that a truck with two men inside pulled over and fired at a group of migrants who were standing by the roadside getting water.

Their statement claimed, “One male immigrant was shot and murdered.” The official stated that although a female immigrant was also shot, she is now doing well at an El Paso hospital.

The statement noted that the two suspects were detained and both were charged with manslaughter on Thursday.

Mike Sheppard, a former warden at the West Texas Detention Center, was officially identified as one of the men detained. The facility’s spokeswoman did not disclose the warden’s name but stated that he had been fired “due to an off-duty event unrelated to his work.” Jail records reveal that he and his brother Mark Sheppard were detained.

The detention facility is located in Sierra Blanca, Texas, roughly four miles north of the scene of the incident, according to a DPS official.
