According to a police officer who interrogated the alleged assailant, the guy charged with stabbing House Speaker Nancy Pelosi‘s husband apparently had plans to assassinate Hunter Biden, California Gov. Gavin Newsom, and actor Tom Hanks.
Lt. Carla Hurley of the San Francisco Police Department testified in court Wednesday that David DePape provided the target list to her during an hour-long interrogation at a hospital immediately after the October attack on Paul Pelosi.
An earlier court document stated that DePape had mentioned many “prominent” state and federal lawmakers, their relatives, and a local professor as further targets, but it did not name any of them.
Prosecutors played 17 minutes of Hurley’s interview during a preliminary hearing Wednesday to determine whether there was enough evidence to hold a trial on the six counts against DePape, who is accused of breaking into the Pelosis’ San Francisco home and brutally attacking Paul Pelosi with a hammer.
Part of Hurley’s interview was DePape’s claim that he told Paul Pelosi, “I have other targets.”
During the attack, when Nancy Pelosi was in Washington, D.C., DePape questioned Paul Pelosi about her whereabouts, saying, “Where’s Nancy?” and threatening to shatter “her kneecaps,” according to a previous court filing.
The court ruled on Wednesday that there was sufficient evidence to proceed to trial.
DePape was charged with attempted kidnapping and violence in federal court. He is also charged with attempted murder, domestic burglary, assault with a deadly weapon, elder abuse, false detention of age, and threats to a public figure and their family. DePape has pled not guilty to the accusations levelled against him.
Hurley stated on Wednesday that DePape discussed conspiracy ideas that inspired the attack.
California’s governor, Gavin Newsom, is a Democrat. In recent years, Biden has been a political target on the right, particularly when the New York Post claimed in October 2020 that it had obtained a “smoking-gun email” between the president’s son and a Ukrainian billionaire.
Meanwhile, Hanks has offered his star power to Joe Biden’s campaign, appearing beside him at a grassroots event in 2020. In January, Hanks narrated a film released by the Biden Inaugural Committee commemorating the president’s accomplishments in his first year in office.
DePape will be arraigned on the state counts on December 28.
