Last week, Bossip reported on the fact that about 40% of the coronavirus deaths in Michigan have been African-Americans. The deaths occurred despite the Black population in the state only accounts for 12 percent.
Previously, we have seen the likes of Idris Elba rebuff claims that Black people are immune to the virus. Now, we always have this troubling news that we (Blacks) are suffering much more than other demographic groups.
On the most recent report from St. Louis Post-Dispatch, the city’s health director, Fredrick Echols, has said that every single death of the COVID-19 in the city of St. Louis have been African-American. Meanwhile, as of on Wednesday, the city recorded about 480 cases and then 12 deaths.
During a briefing on Wednesday, health Director Dr. Fredrick said, “If you look at the health disparities in the city of St. Louis, they’re not unique.” He continued by saying that “Inequities exist across the U.S. and across the world, and it’s posed a challenge for public health agencies, (which) have to address those issues and ensure all individuals, regardless of race, socioeconomic status, income, or educational attainment have access to quality health-related resources.”
The current order for shelter-in-place is due to end on 22 April. However, there is no doubt it will be extended as the coronavirus positive tests continue to be on the rise.
“Based on what we’re currently seeing, with the increase in cases daily as well as the increase in the number of deaths, it is likely we’ll have to extend the stay-at-home order,” Fredrick said. “However, things may change. We will continue to monitor the situation,” the health director added.
