Freddy Civil, a former in-law of Amy Winehouse, passed away after a heroin overdose last year. He was 27.
The information was made public on Tuesday at an inquest that Blake Fielder-Civil, a relative of Civil, attended at the Wakefield Coroner’s Court in England.
Winehouse and Fielder-Civil, both 40, were wed from 2007 to 2009.
According to the Daily Mail, Civil was discovered facedown in his underpants on April 26, 2021, at a hotel in Leeds, where he was staying with a friend named Dennis Lennon. This information was provided to jurors by pathologist Lisa Barker.
Having used heroin, Barker said Civil had “fatal quantities of morphine” in his system when he was declared dead at the scene. He had suffocated on his vomit, it was also discovered during an internal investigation.
Jurors were informed that Civil had recently left Newton Lodge, a mental health facility on the grounds of Fieldhead Hospital in Wakefield, on foot.
In the fall of 2018, a judge sentenced Civil to a mental health facility for an unnamed offence. Civil was initially given a paranoid schizophrenia diagnosis by doctors, however, it was later discovered that this was a drug-induced condition.
Georgette Civil, Civil’s mother, informed the court that the hospitalization of her son was expected to last until June 2021. Freddy had “made a complaint of staff maltreatment,” according to Georgette, who also revealed in a statement read aloud on her behalf that he was frequently “moved around from ward to ward” and received only an hour’s worth of exercise and activity daily.
During his brief marriage to Winehouse, Fielder-Civil reportedly battled addiction, and he even acknowledged introducing the “Rehab” singer to heroin.
After their divorce, Winehouse was able to stop using heavy drugs, but she passed away in 2011 at the age of 27 from alcohol poisoning.
