BIOGRAPHY
Popularly known by his stage name – Skepta, the rapper’s real name is Joseph Olaitan Adenuga Jr. He was born on 19 September 1982 and shared dual citizenship in Britain and Nigeria. As a rapper and one of the prominent artists in the UK Grime scene, he is considered a model by many underground rappers and general hip-hop lovers.
He began his professional career by joining the prestigious Roll Deep for a short while with his younger brother, Jme, who is also in the Grime scene. They were there for a short time until they both pulled out and founded the label prestigiously known as Boy Better Know in 2005.
While he was on the new label, he had a beef with the ace rapper, Devilman for the release of the music video Lord of the Mics 2, which many have come to refer to as one of the most significant clashes in the history of the grime music genre.
He independently released his debut album in 2007, titled Greatest Hits, and his second album, Microphone Champion, in 2009. However, his third album was released under AATW in 2011, titled Doin’ It Again. Having gained so much fame, he decided to try his hands at other ventures like acting, as he made his debut in the movie Anti-Social in 2015. And by 2016, he leased his fourth studio album, Konnichiwa, which was so popular that it earned him the highly coveted Mercury Prize.
As a producer, he utilized his skills in producing and featured in the ace American hip-hop artiste’s (ASAP Rocky) single titled Praise the Lord (Da Shine), which was not just a global hit but earned both artists their highest charting track in 2018. By 2019, he released another album titled Ignorance is Bliss which was so dope that it was charting in over ten countries. By 2020, he released Insomnia which is a collaborative album which featured ace rappers Chip and Young Adz, and it went on to chart among the top 10 albums on the UK Albums Chart.
He has received lots of awards for his craft, including BET Awards and nominations, Brit Awards, MOBO Awards, and so on. Considered one of the most influential Grime music genres acts, he was listed in Debrett’slist of most influential people in the UK in 2017. He was conferred with a chieftaincy title in Nigeria on April 2018.
