Roger Mayweather, a two-time world champion who also was Floyd Mayweather’s trainer and uncle, dies at 58. His death came on Tuesday after years of declining health and complications from diabetes.
Floyd Mayweather Jr. announced the death in a statement just some days after the demise of his ex, Josie Harris. He said, “My uncle was one of the most important people in my life inside and outside of the ring. Roger was a great champion and one of the best trainers in boxing. Unfortunately, his health was failing him for several years, and now he can finally rest in peace.”
He went on to add, “Roger meant the world to me, my father Floyd Sr., my uncle Jeff, our whole family, everyone in and around the Mayweather Boxing Gym and the entire boxing world. It is a terrible loss for all of us. We are thankful for all the love and well-wishes we have already received as word traveled about Roger’s passing. It helps me to see that he was able to touch so many people through his life in boxing because he gave so much to the sport, which was his first and longtime love.”
Meanwhile, Roger was part of one of the most famous families in boxing. He is an uncle to the superstar, Floyd Mayweather Jr., whom he trained for much of his career. And then the brother of former pro fighters and trainers Floyd Mayweather Sr. and Jeff Mayweather.
The two-time world champion boxed professionally from 1981 to 1999. He won world titles as a Junior Lightweight and Junior Welterweight. Equally faced many opponents during his illustrious 18 years career notably, Julio Cesar Chavez Sr., Vinny Pazienza, Samuel Serrano, and lots more.
Roger had been struggling with diabetes and other long-term health issues. He was 59-13 with 35 knockouts (59-13, 35 KOs), in his 18 years career. His first world title came in 1983. Also, he’s usually in the corner for some of Floyd Mayweather’s most significant fights.
May he rest in peace without any suffering. A lot of us will miss him and love him, especially the boxing world!
