Violent Photos Of North Korean Anti-American Propaganda Art, 1950-1970

The Sinchon massacre occurred between October and December 1950 in the Sinchon province of North Korea.

During this attack period, which lasted for 52 days, approximately 35,000 people were maltreated, abused and killed by the American military forces and their supporters. These 35,000 people then made up almost a quarter of the Sinchon population.

Although the North Koreans heavily argued and accused the American forces of carrying out such horrific and cruel acts, their Southern neighbours argued against the reports given. The South Koreans instead accused the security agents and communists of the killings.

The happenings occurred during the second stage of the Korean War and the retreat of the DPRK government from Hwanghae Province. The authorities argued that about 35,000 people were ruthlessly tormented and murdered by the United States forces.

Horrific photographs captured troops dragging out teeth, carving open skulls, and burning people alive.

In 1958, The Sinchon Museum of American War Atrocities was established. It exposes the remains and belongings of those killed mercilessly during this incident. North Koreans were taught in school that Americans “hammered nails into victims’ heads” and “sliced off women’s breasts.”  The administrators put the images all around the museum and the school corridors.

These targeted paintings expressed how North Korea saw America and, by association, the West. They portray the stated mass murder of Sinchon civilians between October and December 1950.

However, North Korea invaded its southern counterpart in 1950, and in retaliation, the United States released exactly 635,000 tons of explosives to North Korea, including 32,000 tons of napalm, during the Korean War.

This further provoked the North Korean and inspired more hostility in retaliation. The then-leader Kim Il-sung immediately understood that the fear of this bombardment of American ammunition had quickly become a significant factor in the lives of his citizens.

Not allowing this fear to weaken his citizenry, he used it as an effective publicity tool against the United States and to support his government. His government fabricated and portrayed the Americans as bloodthirsty murderers hellbent on carrying out the genocide of the North Korean people.

Since Kim was the only person capable of standing against their existing enemy, all forms of opposition against him were dissolved. It also motivates the populace less likely to cooperate or surrender to American forces.
