Students and teachers returned to school Tuesday in the heartbroken community of Uvalde, Texas, for the first time since 19 children and educators had been killed during a mass shooting at an elementary school in May.
As children return to the classroom, the city keeps mourning people who had been killed and call for accountability in the deadly shooting at Robb Elementary School, throughout which law enforcement officials waited more than an hour before coming into a fourth-grade classroom in which the gunman executed the attack.
The first day brought pain for the mother and father whose children died in the massacre.
Steven Garcia, whose 9-yr-old daughter, Eliana, was killed, stated he became an “emotional wreck” Tuesday morning and felt a surge of anger.
“Thinking of all the first days of school with my Ellie, no person expects to should bury their child after leaving them at school!!” he stated in some other post.
“I’m missing one of my babies,” she stated, including that Ellie loved school and was constantly excited to get up and prepare with her sister.
Kimberly and Felix Rubio, whose daughter Lexi was killed, stated that they had been worried for their five other kids on the first day of college.
“I don’t know that the school district has done everything I’d like to see regarding safety measures. However, I know the children must have a few sorts of routine, so looking to stability what’s best for them,” Kimberly stated.
Lexi has been on her mind, and meeting her youngest son’s teacher was challenging.
“It’s quite tough to move on campus understanding that Lexi’s not going to be meeting a teacher this year,” Kimberly stated.
On Tuesday morning, parents arriving at nearby schools had been greeted with taller fences, comprehensive security and cameras, a more significant regulation enforcement presence, and extra counsellors.
I want to shelter her, as a mom, and keep her home; however, of course, I don’t need her to stay in fear,” stated the mom of one student in the Texas community.
