An aged couple from Wisconsin are among three dead after they were hit by lightning close to the White House in Washington DC, police say.
James Mueller, 76, and Donna Mueller, 75, visited the US capital to commemorate their 56th marriage anniversary, said their niece.
An unnamed 29-year-old man wounded in the strike also died.
A fourth person was critically wounded.
The victims were in Lafayette Park in a storm when they were hit.
The park’s closeness to the seat of the US presidency implied that members of the US Secret Service were among the first responders to take care of the victims.
The park stayed closed with emergency services at the scene.
The National Weather Service issued a warning of thunderstorms for the area on Thursday.
