23-Year-Old Patience Masua Is Namibia’s Youngest Member Of Parliament

On January 7, 1999, Patience Masua was born in Namibia, Gobain, Omaheke. When she was 2, her family moved to the capital of Windhoek. She started her education there and had her primary education at Kleine Professor College. She completed her primary education at Suiderhof Primary School because her family was transferred.

For her secondary education, she went to Delta Secondary School in Windhoek, and because of her exemplary character, she was made Deputy Head Girl in the Learners Representative Council (LRC). She studied law at the University of Namibia, Faculty of Law. During her studies, she was active in mainstream students’ politics and campaigning through her newspaper opinion pieces on issues bothering the university. She was also the Faculty Representative for the University of Namibia, Faculty of Law, in the student union.

She contested for the Speaker of the Student Parliament of the University’s Students’ Representative Council (SRC) and won it in 2019. After that, she served as Secretary-General for the National Students Organization (NANSO).

Patience Masua has exceptional debate skills. In 2016, she participated in debate competitions and won the best school award with her teammates at the fifth Annual Model United Nations High School Conference. She also participated in a debate in Botswana for the Orate Africa Debate Championships in 2016.

This aspiring human rights lawyer is about to pursue a Master’s Degree in Human Rights Law and International Law abroad, as the courses aren’t offered in her home country, has her gaze set on creating policies that put human rights issues at the forefront.

Following the resignation of the Namibian Defence Minister Peter Vilho on allegations revolving around corruption in April 2021, President Hage Geingob appointed Patience Masua as a member of the Parliament, making her the youngest member of Parliament at the age of 23.
