The UK is Prepared for its most burning day, with the Met Office predicting that temperatures in regions of the country could hit 42°C today.
The UK Health Security Agency has issued a level 4 “emergency” heat-health alert with the Met Office’s first red intense heat warning remaining in place for large swathes of England, with the risk of severe sickness or threat to life.
Britain is expected to be the hottest place in Europe today, despite the intense heatwave engulfing parts of the continent which has sparked some of the worst wildfires in memory.
But a yellow warning for thunderstorms tomorrow has been issued for parts of England, with the South East, South West, London, the West Midlands, and the East of the country set to see rain.
The heat rocketed to 37.1°C in Hawarden in Flintshire, north-east Wales, yesterday, making it hotter than Tehran, Cairo, Islamabad, New Delhi and Dubai.
It is provisionally the highest seen in the country, breaking the previous Welsh record of 35.2°C at the same location in August 1990.
“The chances of seeing 40°C days in the UK could be as much as ten times more likely in the current climate than under a natural climate unaffected by human influence.” says the Met Office.
