Within an eight-hour period on Thursday, three men were stabbed in separate attacks in the New York City subway system, one of them fatally.
Just before 9 p.m. on Thursday, a 38-year-old Bronx man was getting off a northbound 4 train at the 176th Street station when a suspect walked up behind him and stabbed him multiple times in the back and chest. Police believe this was an unprovoked attack.
After passing out on the platform, the victim was taken to St. Barnabas Hospital, where he subsequently passed away.
Chief of Department Kenneth Corey described the deadly stabbing in the Bronx as “no touch between the victim and offender in that subway car.” “From the footage, It appears that the assailant targets that person individually. We are unaware of the motivation.
He was the second deadly subway stabbing in less than a week and the seventh person to die in the NYC metro system this year.
At a news conference on Friday, New York City Police Commissioner Keechant Sewell declared, “We’ve pushed hundreds of cops into the subway system.” We must stop and prevent this behaviour.
The suspect is still at large and ran westbound on East 176 Street.
A 45-year-old man was slashed in the face earlier on Thursday at 5:15 p.m. by a man who followed him into a Brooklyn subway station in East New York. The suspect in that investigation is still at large.
A 59-year-old man was stabbed in the back at a Harlem subway stop shortly after one o’clock. The victim got into a fight with a stranger while waiting for a train at the 125th Street station at St. Nicholas Avenue, probably as a result of a minor bump on the platform, according to police.
The victim was stabbed in the upper back by the other man, who had drawn a knife. In stable condition, he was brought to Mount Sinai Morningside hospital.
The suspect, a Black male with blue-tinted glasses, blue jeans, and a jacket, fled. He is still at large.
So far this year, police have taken more than 600 people into custody for using forbidden cutting tools on the metro. That is a 95% rise from last year, according to Jason Wilcox, the transit chief.
