Three individuals died after being struck by a big wave in the coastal city of Durban, South Africa, according to emergency services on Sunday.
According to EMS spokeswoman Njabulo Dlungele, the emergency medical services “responded to reports of a freak wave that washed a group of beachgoers into the pier causing several casualties.” Three persons, one a teenager, were regrettably pronounced dead at the scene.
According to Nlungele, at least 17 additional individuals were also transported to various medical centres for treatment after being hurt by the tsunami.
According to the municipality, more than 35 lifeguards helped with the rescue attempts and treated more than 100 persons who were harmed by the enormous wave. According to the municipality, an investigation has been opened into the event.
Around the holiday season, Durban’s beaches are typically bustling with local and foreign visitors.
The holiday season this year is anticipated to draw a sizable number of tourists anxious to visit the beaches once again after the years when COVID-19 lockdowns and safeguards decreased travel to Durban.
Following severe floods in some areas of the KwaZulu-Natal province earlier this year, the port city on South Africa’s eastern Indian Ocean coast has been progressively restoring its beaches after several were blocked due to high levels of E. coli.
