Iranian protests against the morality police were sparked when a 22-year-old woman died after being detained for allegedly breaking tight hijab laws.
According to the BBC, Mahsa Amini was detained in Tehran on Tuesday while en route to see family from the western Kurdistan province.
Witnesses claimed that officers were hitting her as Amini was being transported to a prison facility in a vehicle. After three days in a coma, the young woman died at a hospital on Friday.
Authorities had charged Amini with violating the legislation mandating women to cover their arms and legs with loose clothing and their hair with a hijab.
According to the news source, her death provoked significant protests in Tehran and the Kurdistan province where she resided in Saqez.
The father of Amini stated that his daughter had no health issues in an interview with the pro-reform Emtedad news source on Sunday.
In the meantime, the Basij protest Twitter account tweeted a video of what it claimed to be a demonstration against the paramilitary militia force at a Tehran university.
“I will kill the one who killed my sister … By cannon, tank or firecracker, clerics get lost,” protesters chanted.
