Authorities in the Mexican state of Nayarit on the Pacific coast reported that a bus carrying tourists during the holiday season overturned on a highway, killing 15, and injuring 47 others.

All of the passengers, according to officials in the neighbouring state of Guanajuato, came from the same city of Leon. In Mexico, it’s common for friends, family, or neighbours to pool their resources to hire a bus for beach vacations.

According to Nayarit’s prosecutors, the accident happened on a remote section of road on Friday. At least four children, they claimed, were among the deceased.

Investigations into the crash’s causes were ongoing. The condition of the injured remained unknown at this time, however, 45 of the injured were receiving treatment at nearby hospitals.

Such accidents have frequently happened in the past due to speeding, poor weather or road conditions, or poor maintenance of rental buses.
