Biography

Viola Davis was born on August 11, 1965, in St Matthews, South Carolina. We shall be looking at the biography of Viola Davis, through her prolific career and various accolades.

Viola Davis started her career in acting in Central Falls, Rhode Island. She began with starring mainly in very minor roles for productions for the theatre exhibition. Upon her graduation from the reputable art school (Juilliard School) in 1993, she got awarded the prestigious Obie Award for her performance as Ruby McCollum in the movie titled Everybody’s Ruby, in 1999.

Viola Davis went on to play minor roles across various movies and tv shows towards the end of the ’90s and the dawn of the 2000s before she went on to win the prestigious Tony Award for Best Featured Actress in a Play, owing to her role as Tonya in the movie titled King Hedly II, in 2001. However, her major breakthrough into the acting scene came in 2008, after she was nominated for the prestigious Academy Award (Oscar Award) for Best Supporting Actress, for her role as a disturbed mother in the movie titled Doubt.

After that, it was all ballons and fireworks for Viola Davis, as she has gone on to have a very prolific and amazing career. In 2010, Viola Davis won the Tony Award for Best Actress in a Play, for her roles as Rose Maxson in the movie titled Fences. Also, she got nominated for the Academy Award for Best Actress and also went on to win the prestigious SAG Award, for her role in the movie titled The Help.

From 2014, Viola Davis began staring as lawyer Annalise Keating in the TV show titled How To Get Away With Murder, and by 2015, Viola Davis went on to become the first black woman to win the Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series. Viola Davis also, in 2016, played the role of CIA agent, Amanda Waller, in the movie titled Suicide Squad, and also repeated her role as Maxson in the movie, Fences, for which she ended up winning the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress. Again, she got a nomination for  BAFTA for her role in the crime movie, Widows.

Viola Davis is regarded as the first black actress that has won the Triple Crown of Acting, which is a phrase for anyone who has won a competitive Academy Award, Emmy Award, and Tony Award. Time magazine named her as one of the 100 most influential people in the world in 2012 and 2017.
