Hate Crime - The Version of Racism Against Black People that Never Goes Away

It has been a tough time these past few months, with various forms of hate crime being meted against black people. All forms of hate crime have been meted against black people for centuries now, and with the world getting more enlightened to the place of black people among us, it is rather a source of worry that these hate crimes have not ceased. More black people are still being prone to hate crimes.

On the 25th of May, 2020, Amy Cooper who happens to be a white woman was on the news after she called the cops telling them that her life was threatened after a black man told her to put the leash on her dog. As if this is not enough, just this morning, reports came in showing a viral video of white police officers who in the cause of arresting a black man, pinned him to the floor with his knee directly on the black man’s throat. The black man ended up dead, and the officers have been fired. Nevertheless, this does not put our hearts at ease.

Black people have been the key subjects of various forms of hate crimes in recent times. And it gets worse as most white people have used that medium as a resort to get back to harmless black folks for no reason. You see a black man taking a walk at your neighbourhood, you call the cops telling them you feel ‘threatened’, and the cops come right away, exhibits a crazy display of human rights violation, and gets a much as a slap on the wrist. This is the new technique, as simply hunting down black men on the streets and killing them appears not to be the trends anymore.

Now this scenario explains it all; how our brothers and sisters are said to pose a risk because of their skin colour, and how the institutions charged with protecting us have been used as a new vessel to further the exhibition of hate crime. The law enforcement agencies have shown that they do not really care about who gets hurt, as long as his skin screams black. This is a situation that has to be examined and taken seriously, seeing as there is just much to what anyone can take.

Legislations have to be made that further outlaws hate crimes, with harsher punishments stipulated for persons who engage in such. Law enforcement agents have to educated more on the need to have sound knowledge and enlightenment on the dangers of racism, and how they should keep these sentiments out of the way of their jobs. Officers of the law who are caught to be propagating these acts, should not just be fired, but held accountable to the full extent of the law, and face the consequences of these actions.

Additionally, black people have a lot of roles to play in making sure that things like this end. We own the entertainment industry, so get out more content that tells our stories, and get the world to be attentive to our plight. Also, if you see something, say something. Document and publish acts of hate crimes against black people, using various social media platforms. Class actions should be taken by legal institutions that represent the interest of black people against persons who engage in hate crimes if it appears the government has ‘issues’ with taking these offenders to court. It is not enough that the offender resigns or gets fired, or that he or she apologized, make sure that they get sued for what they have done.

We are imploring the use of the law because this is a very sensitive issue. If this is not addressed sooner or later, black people who feel threatened would have to resort to various primal means to defend themselves. A society with anarchy breeding within it collapses faster as against getting toppled by their enemies. The government must take this very seriously, and give way to better and realistic plans that will help to curb hate crimes against black people.
