Drake had answered the call when it was necessary. The rapper donated $100,000 to bail out protestors who are demanding for justice following the death of George Floyd.
Before Drake answered the call to action, Toronto poet and musician, Mustafa the Poet, made a $400 donation to the National Bail Out program to bail out protestors and then called on the “Toosie Slide” rapper to match his donation “but add three zeros.” “Let’s help reunite black families,” Mustafa wrote.
Meanwhile, it wasn’t long after Mustafa’s call on Drake before the rapper replied and posted a screenshot of his receipt with a $100,000 donation charged to his American Express. “Say less brother,” he told Mustafa.
Following protests across the globe, National Bail Out and other bail relief programs have allocated funds to help protestors who can’t afford their own bail. The Minnesota Freedom Funds raised about $20 million in just four days.
Previously, Drake paid tribute to Floyd, who was killed by a Minneapolis police officer, by sharing “Affirmation,” a poem by Assata Shakur. “Rest in heaven George Floyd,” he wrote in the touching tribute.
Other celebrities, including Kehlani, The Weekend, and G-Eazy, have also made donations to support the justice for Floyd’s cause.
