BIOGRAPHY

Popularly just known as Beyoncé, Giselle Knowles-Carter Beyoncé was born on September 4, 1981. She is an American actress, singer, and songwriter. According to NPR, Beyoncé is the most important female musician of the 21st century because of the risks she takes with her craft and her voice. Her fame and fortune have made her a cultural figure known as “Queen Bey.”

As a young girl, Beyoncé competed in a number of singing and dancing contests. As a member of Destiny’s Child, one of the best-selling girl groups of all time, she shot to stardom in the late ’90s. During their separation, she released her debut studio album, Dangerously in Love (2003), which included the top-charting songs “Crazy in Love” and “Baby Boy” on the US Billboard Hot 100. Beyoncé’s second solo album B’Day, featuring the singles “Irreplaceable” and “Beautiful Liar,” was released after the breakup of Destiny’s Child in 2006. Beyoncé has appeared in a number of films, including The Pink Panther (2006), Dreamgirls (2006), Obsessed (2009), and The Lion King (2019).

Her third album, I Am… Sasha Fierce (2008), was heavily motivated by her marriage to Jay-Z and her performance as Etta James in the film Cadillac Records (2008), for which she won a record-breaking six Grammy Awards in 2010. The hit singles “If I Were a Boy,” “Single Ladies,” and “Halo” all came from this album. In 2011, after having professionally separated from her management and father Mathew Knowles in 2010, she released the musically eclectic album 4.

Later in her career, Beyoncé received worldwide fame for her musically adventurous visual albums, Beyoncé (2013) and Lemonade (2016). The latter was the best-selling album in the world in 2016 and the most critically lauded record of her career. Together with her husband Jay-Z, they formed the Carters and released an album in 2018 titled Everything Is Love.

Beyoncé’s guest appearances on the Ed Sheeran and Megan Thee Stallion remixes of “Perfect” (2017) and “Savage” (2020) respectively, reached number one on the Billboard Hot 100. She also released the critically acclaimed musical film Black Is King that year, along with an accompanying visual album.

Beyoncé’s seventh studio album, Renaissance, which featured disco and house music experimentation and tributes to LGBTQ+ ball culture, was met with even more critical praise when it was released in 2022. It was her first solo studio album since 2016’s Renaissance, and its lead single “Break My Soul” debuted at No. 1.

Over 200 million copies of her albums have been sold around the world, making her a top-tier performer in the music industry. The Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) named her the Top Certified Artist of the Decade, while Billboard named her the Top Female Artist of the Decade, both for her work in the 2000s.

She’s the first artist ever to have their first seven studio albums enter the top spot on the Billboard 200 chart. Beyoncé has won more music awards than any other artist, including a record-breaking 28 Grammys, 26 MTV Video Music Awards (including the Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award in 2014), 24 NAACP Image Awards, 31 BET Awards, and 17 Soul Train Music Awards. After being declared the highest-earning black musician of all time by Billboard in 2014, she was included on Time’s list of 100 women who defined the previous century in 2020.
