10 People Who Laughed Themselves To Death

There are many bizarre ways to die, and surprisingly, laughter is one of the ways to die. In this article, we highlight 10 of the many bizarre cases of people dying from laughter.

1. Alex Mitchell

In 1975, Alex Mitchell was pronounced dead as a result of a ceaseless 25-minute laughter he had while seeing a television program.

Alex Mitchell worked as a bricklayer at Kings Lynn, Norfolk in the UK and a big fan of The Goodies, this was a popular BBC comedy sketch show. As mentioned by his wife, it was while Mitchell was watching the show that he began a ceaseless 25 minutes of laughter after which he had a final great laugh and then passed on.

2. Damnoen Saen-Um

In 2003, Damnoen Saen-Um reportedly died after a two-minute laughter in his sleep.

Damnoen Saen-Um, who was only 52 years old, worked as an ice cream truck driver in Phrae, near Bangkok, in Thailand while asleep on August 20, 2003, and began laughing. After the two-minute-long laughter, his wife attempted to wake him, it was then she realized he had died.

3. Ole Bentzen

Ole Bentzen, a Danish audiologist 1989 while watching a movie comedy began an outburst of laughter which caused a rise in his heart rate. This triggered a heart attack that resulted in his death.

4. Wesley Parsons

In 1893, Wesley Parsons, an Indiana farmer was out catching up with friends when he began an uncontainable laughter which quickly stirred a wild hiccuping that lasted for about two hours and eventually resulted in his death.

5. Zeuxis

Zeuxis was a Greek painter who suffered a dual social disease of both sexism and lookism during the 5th century.

During the course of his job, he was assigned to carry out the painting of a much elderly woman. She was to display as the goddess Aphrodite, Zeuxis while carrying out the painting created a funny and unfavourable image of the woman which he found so funny he burst into a burst of overwhelming laughter that resulted in his death.

6. Thomas Urquhart

A Scottish aristocrat, an anointed knight, a writer, a translator, and also a dedicated Royalist. After the war in resistance to Cromwell in Inverness, he was charged with being a traitor, the following year, in 1650, while at the Battle of Worcester he was taken captive while fighting on the side of Charles II and was taken hostage at the Tower of London.

Upon his release, Thomas Urquhart then went into exile. In 1660, Thomas on receiving news of Charles ll restoration to the throne was so overjoyed he began an uncontrollable laughing spree which eventually led to his death.

7. Mangesh Bhogal

Mangesh Bhogal was a 22-year-old who attended the show an erotic comedy movie alongside his girlfriend in Mumbai when a tragic event struck. Mangesh who was deep into the movie and enjoying every moment of the show suffered a stroke while having a burst of uncontrollable laughter as a result of the movie. Although immediately rushed to the hospital, he was pronounced dead before admission.

8. Pietro Aretino

Pietro Aretino is quite a popular Italian dramatist, writer, and poet, famous for producing 16 pornographic sounds among many and also for being a witty blackmailer.

In 1556, Pietro Aretino who was laughing at a wild joke told by his sister fell backwards from where he was seated, resulting in his death.

9. Tommy Cooper

Tommy Cooper a British comedian performing in 1984 collapsed to the ground. Initially, everyone thought it was part of the script however, he ended up not getting up and was pronounced dead.

10. Chrysippus

As far back as the third century, Chrysippus, a Greek philosopher on a fateful day, thought it amusing to get his donkey intoxicated on wine. The aftermath left him rolling with laughter. That, however, turned out to be  Chrysippus’s last laugh.
